If you have recently upgraded to Windows 7, there is a probability that some of your peripheral devices will not work on this operating system (OS). Troubleshooting Step 1: Install Webcam Driver

This step needs to be followed if your webcam is listed in Device Manager and you can see a yellow exclamation mark next to it. (See image below)

Note: The yellow exclamation mark usually signifies that there are no compatible drivers installed for the device.

The reason why your webcam is not working in the above scenario is that there are either no drivers (or incompatible drivers) installed.

Before You Continue – Read This!

Drivers are small software programs that enable the OS to recognize and control the devices attached to your system. You can either use a tool like DriverFinder to easily scan and download your missing webcam device drivers or else you will need to go to your webcam manufacturer’s support site and check if they have provided drivers to make the model of your webcam compatible with Windows 7.

If your webcam manufacturer provides the drivers for Windows 7, you will need to find, download and install them.

Next, you should restart you computer, after which your webcam should be automatically detected and installed under Windows 7 device manager. If your webcam manufacturer does not provide drivers for Windows 7, proceed to troubleshooting step 3.

Tip: To open Device Manager in Windows 7, click Start, type Device Manager in the Start Search box and press Enter.

Troubleshooting Step 2: Use Troubleshooting Wizard to Identify the Problem and Fix it

If your webcam is listed in Device Manager but does not work even after updating the drivers, you can use the Hardware and Device Troubleshooter provided in Windows 7. Follow the steps given below to start Hardware and Device Troubleshooter in Windows 7-

1. Click on the Start button
2. Click on ControlPanel
3. Under the System and Security category, click Find and fix problems
4. Next, under Hardware and Sound, click Configure a Device
5. Your system may prompt you to enter the Administrator password
6. Enter the Administrator password
7. Follow the instructions given in the troubleshooting wizard to identify and fix the issue

Troubleshooting Step 3: Install Windows Vista Driver in Compatibility Mode

If your webcam manufacturer does not provide drivers for Windows 7 for your make and model of webcam, you can try installing the Vista Driver in compatibility mode. You will get an error which says that the program is not compatible with your version of Windows when you click on the setup file. In such a situation, you need to follow the steps below to install the webcam in compatibility mode:

1. Right click on setup file for the webcam
2. Scroll down to Properties and click it
3. Click on Compatibility mode
4. Check the box for “Run this program in compatibility mode for…”
5. Select Window Vista SP1 from the dropdown menu
6. Under the Privileges level , check “Run as an Administrator”
7. Click on Apply

There has been many questions by Windows users (both XP and Vista) who have recently switched over to Windows 7 regarding DVD and CD-ROM device compatibility.

So what is the cause of the frustration?

DVD/CD-ROM drives (and software programs) that worked well with Windows 7 predecessors are now causing problems or are simply not working at all. Some users may be surprised to find that their DVD drive is not recognized in Windows 7 explorer even though the DVD-ROM drive is listed in the BIOS during system boot.

Common Solutions For Fixing “Drive Not Recognized” Errors

Before you start going through the possible solutions in the steps below, I seriously recommend you download a hardware update tool that I personally use to make sure all my device drivers are updated with the most recent manufacturer-released drivers. You should be updating your PC regularly and this is the easiest way to avoid (and fix) problems with your hardware.

Troubleshooting Method #1: Reinstall the DVD (or CD-ROM) Drive

If you are getting the above mentioned errors then you need to uninstall the device (DVD) and reinstall again. Follow these steps to uninstall the DVD drive:

• Click “Start”.
• In the “Start Search” box, type “Device Manager” and press Enter.
• In the Device Manager window that is displayed, locate the DVD/CD-ROM drives and click on “+” sign to expand it.
• Right-click on the DVD drive and select “uninstall“.
• Restart your computer.
• On restart, Windows should automatically detect and reinstall DVD driver.
• Once the driver installation is complete, check your DVD drive to see if it works now.

If the DVD drive is still not recognized after reinstalling, one of the reasons for the DVD drive not being recognized may be corrupted registry entries.

Troubleshooting Method #2: Delete Corrupt Registry Entries

Let’s take a look at the steps to get rid of corrupted registry entries that may be the reason for DVD drive errors.

• Click “Start” and then select “Run”.
• Type “regedit” and press Enter to open the Registry Editor window.
• You may be prompted to enter Administrator password.  Enter the password and click Allow.
• The registry window will be displayed now. Here locate the registry key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE in the left navigation pane.
• Click on the “+” sign to expand the registry key or right click on the registry key and click on Expand.
• Navigate to following sub registry key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}.
• Once you reach the above mentioned sub registry key you will be able to see Upper Filters registry entry in the right pane.

Note: You will also find an UpperFilters.bak registry entry. You are not required to remove it. If you do not see UpperFilters registry entry, you still have to remove the LowerFilters registry entry.

• Right-click on the Upper Filters registry entry and select Delete.
• In the same way delete the Lower Filters registry entry.
• You will be prompted for confirmation for deletion. Click on Yes.
• Exit the Registry editor.
• Restart your computer.

Troubleshooting Method #3 – Disable Integrity Checks

• Go to “Start > All programs > Accessories“
• Right click on “Command Prompt > Run as administrator“
• Type “bcdedit /set loadoptions DDISABLE_INTEGRITY_CHECKS” and press “Enter“.
• Restart your computer.

If your DVD drive is still not recognized after following the troubleshooting methods above, you can try to download and install a hotfix released by Microsoft. For this, you need to go to Microsoft support site and search for hotfix “976187“. The hotfix can help fix some DVD drives issues.

One last point: Some users have reported that certain DVD drive software like WinDVD (for watching movies) have been the cause and after unistalling the software or upgrading to the newest version, their DVD-ROM drive was then recognized in Windows.

Every Windows user will agree with me when I say that experiencing a Blue Screen of Death (BSOD) screen, (also known as a “stop error code”), is one of the worst and most frustrating things that can happen to your PC.

So what exactly is a BSOD Stop Error?

A stop error code usually occurs when there is an underlining software or hardware issue on your computer. The system shuts itself down, and you will lose any unsaved data when Windows displays a stop error screen.

When your PC crashes or a reboot occurs, you will usually experience a screen that looks like this:

Fortunately, there are various methods to solve blue screen errors in Windows 7. You should be able to log in to your system (after a system crash due to a BSOD) to solve potential errors following the methods I outline below.

Since I have fixed countless PC problems I can tell you by experience that a majority of the blue screen errors I have encountered are due to one of three things:

1. Device drivers
2. RAM errors
3. HEAT

That’s it. There are less common causes such as a failing PSU (power supply), but for most users it’s going to be one of the top three culprits listed above

Before You Continue – Read This!

Before you continue on, it’s important that you scan your PC and make sure all your hardware device  drivers are updated. This will solve most blue screen issues!

I personally use DriverFinder and use it on a monthly basis to keep my devices up-to-date. You should do the same.

After you make sure your drivers are updated, you can use the methods I outline below if you are still experiencing stop errors.

Steps To Fix Blue Screen Errors (Windows 7)

Note: You may be prompted to enter your administrator’s password when you try to execute certain system tasks!

Method 1: Using System Restore

1. Click on the Start button on the Taskbar.
2. Type “System Restore” (without quotes) in the Search box and hit Enter or,
3. Click on System Restore (when you see System Restore pop up  in the list of search results).
4. Make sure the “Recommended restore” radio button is checked on the restore utility window.
5. Click on Next and follow the instructions given.

Note: There is the option on the restore utility to select “Choose a different restore point”. Unless you have a specific reason to select a different date and time than what Windows recommends, just select the recommended option stated in the steps above. If you choose to select another one, follow these steps:

1. Click on that desired date and time, and Windows 7 will perform a scan for any affected programs in that restore point.
2. Once completed, click Next and follow the instructions given.

Once you have selected the restore point, your system will start the restoring process, after which you will have to restart the system.

Method 2: Check memory problems

Memory management issues can also cause a BSOD in Windows 7. Thankfully, Windows 7 has a Memory Management Diagnostic tool that detects and solves problems related to system memory.

1. Click on the Start button on the Taskbar.
2. Type “Windows Memory Diagnostic Tool” or “Memory” (without quotes) in the Search box or,
3. Click on Windows Memory Diagnostic Tool (in the search results).
4. Click on “Restart now and check for problems (Recommended)”.
5. The system will restart, and you need to follow the instructions given on the screen.

Method 3: Remove unsupported devices

Unsupported hardware may also result in a BSOD error. The easiest solution to this problem is to uninstall such hardware. You can detect the hardware that’s creating the problem through the Device Manager in Windows.

1. Click on the Start button on the Taskbar.
2. Type “Device Manager” in the Search box.
3. Click on Device Manager (in the list of results).
4. Expand all categories in the hardware tree – (click the little arrow icons).
5. Look for devices that have a red cross (x) against their name. These devices are not supported by Windows 7 and may be one of the reasons for BSOD errors.
6. Right click on these devices, and select Uninstall.

A corrupt registry can also lead to BSOD errors in Windows 7. I would suggest you to download a good registry cleaner and scan your system for registry errors. You can find one on my recommended software page. There are both free and paid versions available and they both have pros and cons. Most of the registry cleaners available are easy to install and operate.

The cleaning process is automated, and the programs also backup the registry before cleanup, which acts as a safeguard. You can restore the registry to its previous state if you encounter system errors after the cleaning process.

There’s really no need to panic when you see a BSOD error on your screen. Just stay calm and follow the checklist above to fix the error.

This is probably one of the most frustrating and “generic” error codes reported by Windows. When I say “generic”, I’m referring to the fact that Windows is basically telling you that a hardware device on your PC is well… not working. (Gee, Thanks!)

Error code 43 is reported anytime Windows does not recognize a device – whether it be a USB port, Hard drive, video card or any other piece of hardware connected to you computer.

You will usually see an error message like this:

NOTE: The hardware device above is only an example. It could be any device on your computer that is reporting error 43.

What Causes Error 43?

95% of the time, error code 43 means that a device driver is either missing, corrupt, outdated (so Windows problems communicating properly with the hardware), or the hardware is faulty and needs to be replaced.

Device drivers can become damaged or corrupt over time, and most users will eventually experience a driver error. Installing and removing software and hardware can cause conflicts in the registry and can alter driver communication.

Sometimes you can bypass the error temporarily such as removing the device from the motherboard and reseating it, removing the power cord from the power supply and restarting  your computer after a few minutes, etc. However, theses are temporary and will not fix the actual problem.

Solution For Fixing Error Code 43 Messages

The first thing of course is to make sure your device driver is up to date. I have provided two way to accomplish this below:

Option #1: Update your drivers automatically (the easy way)

If your not that technical and don’t want to hassle with trying to locate the correct device drivers from your PC’s manufacturer and then go through the process of uninstalling and re-installing your drivers manually, then you should run a free scan with a recommended driver tool.

This software will match and download the correct drivers you need. It’s safe and saves a lot of time keeping your PC updated.

Option #2: Update your drivers manually (the technical way)

If you consider yourself pretty technical and feel confident making changes to your system, then follow the steps below:

Step #1 – Uninstall the current driver:

First, you need to uninstall the current driver…

• Click “Start > Run” and type “sysdm.cpl” in the text box and press ENTER
• Open the “Hardware” tab on the System Properties dialog box, then click on “Device Manager”
• Double click “Device Type”, then click on the hardware device that is reporting Error 43
• Next, go to the “Driver” tab and click “Uninstall” to uninstall the device driver completely

Step #2 – Locate the correct driver:

After you have uninstalled the driver, visit the manufacturers website and locate the newest driver for your device. You can usually find the latest driver under the technical support or driver section of the company’s website.

Step #3 – Download the driver:

Download the driver and save it to your computer. It will most likely be compressed in a .ZIP file, or an executable file (.EXE).

Step #4 – Install the new driver on your PC:

Extract the .ZIP file or double-click the .EXE and install the driver.

Step #5 – Reboot your PC:

If you uninstalled the old driver and installed the correct new driver, it should fix the communication problem between Windows and your hardware device, eliminating the error 43 message. If not, you might want to install the faulty device on another PC and see if it works correctly.

Step-By-Step Microphone Solutions

Ok, before you start pulling your hair out, I always tell users to MAKE SURE your audio driver is up-to-date and you are running THE RIGHT VERSION for your PC. Missing, corrupt or incorrect drivers are the cause of most sound and microphone problems.

Step #1 – Update Your Audio Drivers

Download and run a free scan of DriverFinder and make sure your audio drivers are not out-dated.

If  there is a problem with your Windows 7 audio driver, your microphone will never work and out-of-date drivers cause 90% of Window device errors. Using an automatic driver update software is the easy way to keep your computer device drivers working properly.

Step #2 – Test Your Audio Device On Another PC

If after updating your sound drivers your microphone is still not working, take your device and try plugging it into another computer (if you have access to one). This will eliminate the possibility that your actual hardware device is damaged. It’s not likely, but when troubleshooting any problem, you need to check some basics first.

Step #3 – Double Check Windows 7 Audio Settings

Make sure the microphone you are trying to use is set as your default audio input device in Windows. To check, follow the steps below:

• Go to “Start > Control Panel“
• Click on “Hardware and Sound > Sound > Manage audio devices“
• When the dialog box appears, click on the “Recording” tab
• Make sure the microphone you are trying to use has a green checkmark next to it

NOTE: Take a look at the image above and make sure the microphone that is set as your Windows 7 default option is actually the right one you are trying to use. As you can see from this image, there are multiple microphones connected (or used to be connected) to this system and a program like Skype could be trying to use the “6 – USB Audio Device” instead of the default one with the green checkmark, “7 – USB Audio Device“.

How To Change Your Default Microphone:

• Go to “Start > Control Panel“
• Click on “Hardware and Sound > Sound > Manage audio devices“
• When the dialog box appears, click on the “Recording” tab
• Right-click on the microphone device you wish to use and select the “Set as Default Device” option

Step #4 – Check Your Software Application Settings

If your microphone is not working in a specific software program (like Skype, etc.) but is working in other applications, then make sure your mic is selected in the “preferences”, “tools” or “options” menu (it will differ depending on the program you are using). This might sound stupid, but updating software can sometimes cause conflicts or problems with your settings, even though the software SHOULD recognize it’s own settings and save them while updating to the recent version.

Step #5 – Double-Check the Microphone “Mute” Option

Well, technically this should have been ruled out before trying to fix your microphone but are you sure your mute button is not on? It’s a “duh” moment, but we all have them.

If you have followed the steps above, then your microphone should now be working. If not, then you probably have come to the conclusion through following the steps above that your microphone is bad. In that case, you should be looking for your keys right now to head out to the nearest electronics store for a new one

I’ve seen several posts on the web that suggest disabling Bluetooth to prevent the Windows error  message “Unable to start the bluetooth stack service” error message. The problem on Windows 7 is that it can cause the “Devices and Printers” screen to hang or completely lock up – forcing you to reboot.

Common Solution For Bluetooth Stack Errors:

First thing you should do is update your bluetooth driver to the latest version from the manufacturer. This usually fixes the problem for most users. You can either search the manufacturer’s website and download/install the current driver, or you can run a recommended driver update program.

I personally use DriverFinder to keep all my Windows drivers up-to-date.

If you choose to locate and download the latest bluetooth driver for you motherboard, be sure to manually UNINSTALL your current driver first before updating.

If you are receiving the “Unable to start the bluetooth stack service” error message and you are NOT using any bluetooth devices (or don’t plan too), you can disable the bluetooth support services (if it is currently running). To disable the service, follow the steps below:

1. Click Start button and type “services.msc” (without quotes) and then hit Enter.
2. The services list will load and then locate the “Bluetooth Support Service” and double-click it.
3. On the “General” tab, change the “Startup type” option to “Disabled”.
4. Click the “Apply” button and then “Ok”.

NOTE: If you are having a problem with a current bluetooth device you are trying to use, make sure that the Bluetooth Support Service was actually running before following the steps above to disable the service and error message. You can try changing the “Startup type” to “Automatic” and see if it fixes the problem.

If your using Internet Explorer 7 or 8, try updating or disabling your proxy (if you have permission):

What is Audiodg.exe?

Audiodg.exe is the audio component for both Windows Vista and Windows 7.  Inside your Windows Task Manager,  it is represented as an “Audio Device Graph Isolation”. The process enables your PC audio driver to run under a separate  session as the user that is currently logged in, and is the audio engine for Windows. This prevents other software applications from modifying  or changing and content or plug-in enhancements.

Common Errors With Audiodg.exe

Even though the audiodg.exe system process is safe, it has been known to cause the following problems:

• Poor performance of “stuttering” while playing movies on Media Player or VLC player.
• Constant “beeping” sounds while performing regular tasks in Vista of Windows 7.
• High CPU usage or memory leakage, sometimes peaking at 100% CPU and causing lockups.
• Can cause all audio/sound/speakers to stop working after a few minutes. Even after reboot.

Preventing Audiodg.exe From Hogging  CPU Usage

Out of all the possible problems, the most common complaint is that the audiodg.exe process hogs CPU process and causes the PC’s sound to “stutter” or completely lose audio altogether. Some users report that their computer locks up from CPU usage being tapped out as high as 95-100 percent.

To minimize the effect of audiodg.exe on your system, you can try the following method.

• Right-click on the speaker icon on the bottom right corner of the screen.
• Select Playback Devices.
• Look for the icon with the green check mark.
• Highlight the icon.
• Click Properties and then click on the Enhancements tab.
• Check the “Disable All Enhancements” checkbox.

Another solution offered is to simply disable the service at reboot. This prevents the utility from automatically running at system Startup. You can re-enable the process when you need to use it.

I also recommend you perform a free driver scan on your PC and make sure your audio drivers are updated.

If your computer speakers, sound card (or headphones) are not working in Windows, it can only be one of three things:

When troubleshooting PC audio problems, it’s best to use a “process or elimination” starting with the simple stuff first. Let’s go through the list in order so we can find out what the source of your sound problem is.

Fixing Windows Speaker Problems:

Ok, first things first. Let’s check to see if it’s your actual speakers or headphones that are the problem:

This might sound stupid, but make sure your volume is actually turned up on your device and that you don’t have your Windows audio settings muted. You can check the bottom right corner of your computer screen next to your date/time settings and click on the speaker icon. Make sure the volume is turned up

Don’t worry if you don’t see a speaker icon. This is an optional setting to display, and not every Windows computer will have it in the system tray. You can still check it under your Windows control panel.

Step 1:

1. Unplug your speakers or headphones.
2. Check and make sure the connectors are in good shape (not frayed or loose).
3. Plug them into another PC and check if you can hear sound.

If your speakers or headphones work on another computer, then we know that it is not a problem with your actual hardware (speakers/headphones).  Let’s move on to the next step.

Step 2:

Installing or Re-installing your audio drivers. Most of the time, this is the root of the problem. Sometimes, device drivers can become corrupted or outdated due to software upgrades and Windows updates or service packs.

Locate the most recent version of your audio device driver from your PC manufacturer. If you want to make it easy to update and match the correct audio driver you need, then I recommend you download DriverFinder. It’s a great tool, and I personally run it on a monthly basis to ensure all my PC drivers are up-to-date.

If you feel comfortable updating your audio drivers manually, then first uninstall your current audio driver:

1. Go to Start > Control Panel > hardware and Sound > Device Manager.
2. Expand the device tree under Sound, video and game controllers.
3. Make sure there isn’t a yellow warning icon on any of your audio devices under the tree.
4. Right click on the problem device and select Uninstall.
5. Reboot your PC. If you have the option to stop Windows from installing the audio driver again on reboot, stop it.
6. Install the latest audio driver for your hardware you downloaded from the manufacturer’s site.

Reboot your computer again and check to see if your speakers or headphones are now working. If not, then move to the next step…

SPECIAL NOTE: If you are trying to fix a USB connected sound device (such as USB headphones) and have updated your audio driver and your sound still doesn’t work, then make sure your have updated your USB device drivers as well and that there is no yellow warning icon in the device manager under your USB device tree.

If you have standard mini-jack connectors on your speakers or headphones, then you might have bad jacks on your sound card (either external card or on-board) or like stated above, bad physical USB port(s).

Step 3:

If this is the case, you will need to either swap out your motherboard or external sound card to replace the actual hardware itself. This can be expensive depending on your PC, so if you find that your audio hardware has actually failed, make sure you check to see if it is still under warranty so you can replace it for free.
